A dawn call to Bude policeman Peter Travers: the master of Merrifield Manor, close to Bridgerule, has lost his wife.
By chance, business analyst and occasional sleuth George Gilbert had just met the owner's son. Father and son were devastated when the police found no easy solution and walked away. George didn't like half-solved problems. Her friend Maxine, recently promoted at Cleave Camp Listening Station, had her own challenge: why was trust between staff here so fragile? How could the cobwebs be swept away? Both enquiries meant digging into Bude's past: the old Canal; the Railway; even an old wartime airfield. All had disturbing links to present day remains. But George also found another memory, one that was no longer completely beyond reach. |
