George Gilbert is down in Bude to talk at the Limelight Exhibition about Sir Goldsworthy Gurney, the man who discovered limelight and used this to light the Houses of Parliament for half a century. He was also the inventor of the steam car - unfortunately just a year before the development of steam railways.
George's plans are disrupted when she comes across an old friend, Maxine Tavistock, who has just escaped from an attempted abduction. It takes a while before Maxine finds a way to share her story despite the Official Secrets Act; and even longer before she dares take the tale to the police.
The policeman she needs to talk to is Peter Travers. He is now in charge of Bude Police Station, but his small team finds itself overwhelmed by their case-load. George and Maxine's contribution is vital to unravelling the various cases.
